Choose a manageable project before you choose a product. Use this short decision guide to work out what you need, what you can safely do, and what to record.

1. Name the outcome

Write one sentence describing the result you want: a drawer that opens smoothly, a surface cleaned without damaging its finish, or a shelf that holds the items you actually use. Separate appearance from function so you can decide which problem matters most.

2. Check the cause and your limits

Photograph the problem and look for labels, dimensions, and care instructions. If the cause is uncertain, damage keeps returning, or the work involves mains electricity, gas, structure, or specialist plumbing, get qualified help before proceeding.

3. Make a small project brief

  • Material: what is the item or surface made of, and what finish does it have?
  • Measurements: what dimensions or clearances affect the task?
  • Supplies: what do you already own, and what would you need to buy?
  • Budget: what is the total cost, including tools you may use only once?
  • Timing: how much preparation, drying or curing time, and cleanup is needed?
  • Stop conditions: what would make you stop and ask a professional?

4. Review before buying

Compare a repair, replacement, and leaving the item as it is. Check product compatibility and instructions rather than relying on a general tip. Avoid combining cleaning products, exceeding storage weight limits, or working at an unsafe height.
